Why is Social Media Video Dying in 2025? [5 Reasons]

seo for social search

For years, marketers have been told the same thing: video is the most powerful form of content on social media. And while that was true for much of the past decade, the social media landscape in 2025 looks very different. User behaviour, platform priorities and the sheer volume of video online mean that video no longer automatically guarantees reach or engagement. In fact, in many cases other formats are now performing better. So, why is video no longer the silver bullet it once was?

Why is Social Media Video Dying in 2025? [5 Reasons]

  1. Audiences Are Experiencing Video Fatigue
  2. Platform Algorithms Are Shifting
  3. Carousels are Out Performing Video
  4. Not Every Message Suits Video
  5. Audiences Want Value, Not Just Entertainment

1. Audiences Are Experiencing Video Fatigue

When it comes to social media videos, we’ve reached saturation point. Between Reels, TikToks, Shorts, Stories and other formats, people are inundated with video content daily. As a result of this, audiences are scrolling past videos that don’t grab attention immediately or feel like they’ve seen them before. Static images, carousels, and text-based posts often break through the noise simply because they offer a refreshing change of pace.

2. Social Media Algorithms Are Shifting

In 2025, many platforms are placing stronger emphasis on dwell time and meaningful engagement rather than autoplay views. Carousels, long-form text posts and interactive features such as polls are proving more effective because they encourage clicks, swipes, and thoughtful responses. These actions send stronger signals to the algorithm than a passive 3-second video view.

3. Carousels are Out Performing Video

In terms of content types, carousel posts are eclipsing video in engagement across platforms in particular:

  • Instagram: Carousels reach 13% more users and generate 50% higher engagement compared to Reels.
  • TikTok: Carousels earn 81% more engagement and 82% more likes than videos, even though the reach is only marginally higher.
  • LinkedIn: Carousel-style deliver up to three times more engagement than videos.

4. Not Every Message Suits Video

Video works brilliantly for storytelling, behind-the-scenes insights, or showcasing personality. But not every piece of content warrants a full production. Sharing data, step-by-step guides, or industry insights can often be done far more effectively with infographics, carousels or simple text posts. The best-performing brands are choosing the format that fits the message, rather than defaulting to video.

8. Audiences Want Value, Not Just Entertainment

The biggest shift in 2025 is that social media users are craving content that adds value to their day rather than simply mindless entertainment. They’re looking for insights, tips and authentic conversation. Whether that comes through video, text, or images doesn’t

Rethink Your 2025 Social Media Content Strategy

Ultimately, video still has its place in a strong content strategy, but it is no longer the guaranteed winner it once was. The landscape in 2025 rewards variety, authenticity and formats that drive meaningful interaction.
